1. General information
The subject and its expected results respond to the following approaches and objectives: (a) to read, interpret and understand Greek texts in the light of the process of the constitution of philosophy.
b) to know the vocabulary and conceptual apparatus of ancient philosophy.
c) to acquire and practice appropriate study and philosophical intellectual work techniques (information search, evaluation and synthesis), as well as the use of bibliographic materials for the production of reports, commentaries or essays
This approach is aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda: Goal 4: Quality education; Goal 5: Gender Equality; Goal 10: Reducing Inequalities; Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities; Goal 12: Responsible Production and Consumption; Goal 13: Climate Action; Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
2. Learning results
Upon completion of the subject, the student will be able to:
1) Know the intellectual, social and scientific circumstances in which ancient philosophical reflection develops.
2) Identify the specific features of ancient philosophy.
3) Apply this knowledge to philosophical debates.
3. Syllabus
1. How to read ancient Greek texts
2. Texts and problems of archaic Greek thought
3. Texts and problems of classical Greek thought
4. Academic activities
At the beginning of the term there will be a methodological introduction essential to follow the subject. The fundamental texts will also be presented and will be read and commented on during the classes.
The program offered to students to achieve the expected results includes the following activities: Theoretical classes.
Practical classes.
Work and personal study.
Assessment tests or activities
5. Assessment system
First call:
A) Continuous assessment: oral presentation of a text (4 points) and submission of an essay on one of the texts studied in the subject (6 points)
Assessment criteria: the quality of the structure of the essay (or essays), the relevance of the contents and argumentative rigor as well as the clarity, conciseness and precision of expression will be taken into account (criteria also applied in the evaluation of oral presentations)
B) Global assessment test: based on the delivery of two essays about some of the texts studied in the subject (5 points each).
The delivery of the essays will be made on the date officially determined by the faculty.
Evaluation criteria: the quality of the structure of the essay (or essays), the relevance of the contents and argumentative rigor, as well as the clarity, conciseness and precision of expression will be taken into account(criteria also applied in the evaluation of oral presentations)
Second call: global assessment test identical to the previous one.
